Waiting on Wednesday: Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

One of my most anticipated releases this year: Forever by Maggie Stiefvater, the third and final book in her Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. I actually met Ms. Stiefvater when she came to New Orleans last year, and I hadn't read her books yet but wanted to support authors coming to the city. I'm so glad I did. It turned out to be one of my favorite reads of 2010; I enthusiastially recommend this series.

Ms. Stiefvater's videos for her books have been very cool, and Forever is no exception:

(I can't believe she did that herself!)

Review and Twitter Party: Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

From the author's website:

This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.

Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn't cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.

But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it's only me who's not firmly in my own skin.

I recently succumbed to all the rave reviews and read Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver; it blew me away (review here). I was thrilled when I received a copy of the 2nd book in the trilogy, Linger, for review. For some reason, it took me a bit to get into Linger, but once I did I was hooked. I'd say Linger has two storylines going on: Grace and Cole.

Linger picks up a few months after Shiver left off - Grace and Sam are still together and things are pretty much in a routine. Grace goes to school, Sam works, and at night the sleep together in Grace's room, unbeknownst to her parents, and Isobel is now a part of their small circle of friends.

Grace has started getting headaches and then fevers and nosebleeds; which would be a regular part of life except that she's never been sick before. She feels strange, and is pretty sure she knows what the problem is - she has the same strange scent as the dead wolf she found in the woods. Sam is starting to accept the fact that he has a future, and won't acknowledge that Grace is sick. Together they spend a large part of the book ignoring it. Grace and Sam finally admit to each other that there is a problem, and the solution is iffy at best.

As far as Cole's story - I didn't like Cole at first. He was self-absorbed and irritating. As the story progressed and he spent time with Isobel, I began to like him a bit more. It's weird how two egocentric characters could bring out sympathy in each other. I'll be curious to see how (if?) both of their characters grow in the next book.

Linger felt a bit more fragmented then Shiver, but I think this may have been the author's intention. One of the things I liked about Shiver was that Ms. Stiefvater titled the chapters as temperatures, conveying the sense of urgeny in the story. In Linger, that's not an issue anymore; it's almost like instead of urgency you feel almost a sense of resignation? defeat? inevitability? at both Grace's illness and Cole's attempts to escape his demons.

So, all in all, I enjoyed Linger very much. I love the way Sam thinks in lyrics and poetry; it's one of my favorite facets of the book. Although the events at the end of the book were not a surprise to me, the way the book ended was a surprise - and now I am anxiously awaiting the third book, Forever (out in July 2011).

I enjoyed Linger and give it 4 out of 5 fleur-de-lis:

This book was provided to me free of charge by Scholastic in exchange for an honest review.

Review and Giveaway: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

From the author's website:

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human... until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

I picked up this book when Ms. Stiefvater came to New Orleans for a book signing. I hadn't read Shiver yet, but planned to, "eventually". Why, oh why, did I wait so long to read this book?!?

When Grace was a small child, she was dragged off her backyard swing by wolves and almost killed. One wolf stopped the pack from killing her, and since then Grace has felt a special bond with "her wolf". She looks forward to seeing her wolf every winter, when the pack comes to the woods behind her house.

Sam has watched Grace ever since he kept the rest of his pack from killing her 6 years ago. He watches her from afar, thinking about her, wishing their lives weren't worlds apart.

After a wolf attack on a fellow student, the town decides to kill the wolves. As she arrives home after trying to stop the hunters, she spies a wolf on her porch - he'd been shot. Then, suddenly, not a wolf, a boy - Sam.

The love story between Sam and Grace is epic. You wouldn't think a story between teenagers could be, but the obstacles between them seem insurmountable. As they fight the end - Sam's eventual final change into wolf, they know that the time they have together is stolen from fate. Grace is very practical and pragmatic, Sam is a dreamer. He views his experiences as song lyrics, finding the beauty in everything. Together they fit together like pieces of a puzzle, each giving the other what they need to be complete. As they work through trying to experience a whole relationship in a matter of weeks, they are also trying to find a "rogue" wolf, a former classmate who was thought to be dead. The wolves in Ms. Stiefvater's world change according to the temperature. They're human in the warm months and wolf when it's cold. Her use of temperature at each chapter heading sets the urgency of the scenes.

The one thing I didn't care for was that there didn't seem to be any positive parenting influences. With the exception of Sam's pack leader, Beck, who had a few issues of his own, the parents of the teens were self-absorbed, absent, and/or clueless.

This book is like a painting; a work of art - the beauty is in the words. Can I use the word "beautiful" to describe Ms. Stiefvater's writing? (It's my blog, I vote yes.) When I think about this book I picture a painting in my head - stark white with splotches of color - bits of red dotted randomly around the canvas representing Grace's mother, light brown for her father. Sam is huge swaths of earthy green cutting across the canvas, and Grace is ice blue, like sunshine on snow. Add some black for Sam's pack and warm yellow for Grace's friends, and the painting is complete.

This book drew me in from the first few pages and I didn't want to put it down. I bawled like a baby during pages 341-344, and then again at the end for completely different reasons. As soon as I finish this review I'm going to read it again.

I give Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater 5/5 stars - a definite keeper! I cannot wait to read the next book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series - Linger, which comes out July 20.

I know I've posted the Linger trailer before, but it really is a cool trailer:

Amazing: Linger Trailer by Maggie Stiefvater

I'm not a fan of book trailers. I don't know why, I guess I'd rather read the blurb and imagine the characters the way I want to. HOWEVER, if all book trailers could be this cool I might change my mind:

Fabulous - and she did it herself (with a bit of help, LOL!)

Can. Not. Wait!

Cougarville? How about a Giveaway?

My birthday is coming up soon - May 11 - and.... I'm turning 40 *cries*. I keep thinking I counted wrong - I can't possibly be turning 40! Then I remember I've been married for almost 18 years. Damn!

So, since I'm trying to deny the fact that I'm getting older, I've decided to celebrate my birthday by giving away a Young Adult book. When Maggie Stiefvater was in New Orleans last month, I had her sign an extra copy of Shiver:

I confess I haven't read my copy yet, so I can't give an opinion on it, but the reviews I've seen are fantastic.

So, if you'd like to win a copy of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, leave me a comment telling me it's going to be okay and turning 40 is not the end of the world, OR, because I still feel like a punk-ass kid, leave a Chuck Norris or "yo' mamma" joke.

Stuff you need to know:
1. Contest ends at midnight (central time) on May 10.
2. Contest is international.
3. You must be a follower of this blog.
4. Winner has 5 days to respond before I draw a new winner.

Meeting Maggie Stiefvater, Carrie Ryan, and Jackson Pearce

I was playing around on twitter a few weeks ago, and stumbled across a tweet that Maggie Stiefvater was coming to New Orleans. I was thrilled - I haven't read her books yet but Shiver is definitely on my TBR, so the chance to meet her had me all excited. Little did I know she was bringing some friends:

(left to right: Jackson Pearce, Maggie Stiefvater, and Carrie Ryan)

Excuse my bad camera skillz, they were so entertaining I kept forgetting to take pictures! They each told funny stories about being an author and answered some of the most common questions they get. I really enjoyed seeing them interact with each other - as I watched and listened, I thought to myself "This is a perfect example of how women should treat each other - they're incredibly supportive and genuinely like each other."

Maggie talked about how she used to hate the question, "what made you decide to write this book?", until she met an author she admired, Melina Marchetta, who wrote Saving Francesca. She was thrilled to be speaking with Ms. Marchetta, and asked, "What made you decide to write this book?" and had an "ah-ha" momet. (I had to chuckle, because as she was speaking, it popped into my head that I thought this was the book that Danielle at Alpha Reader had gushed about this book several months ago; then Maggie mentioned Melina was Australian, at which point I thought "Bingo!")

Carrie Ryan was sooo nice, she actually approached us while we were looking at the books for sale, trying to decide if The Dead Tossed Waves was a follow-up to The Forest of Hands and Teeth or a separate book. She told a very entertaining story about how she ended up writing about Zombies, and talked about her upcoming short story in Zombies vs.Unicorns, which looks like it's got some great authors on board! And she wrote a really nice dedication to my son (and his bum leg) when she signed his books for me.
Jackson Pearce is a new-to-me author, she wrote As You Wish, a book about genies. She also talked about working with editors and when asked what book she wished she'd written, her answer was "Harry Potter", of course everyone laughed!

Now, I haven't read Shiver yet, but apparently one of the characters writes notes to himself on his hand? Look closely at the picture below:

It was hard to get a good picture where you could see there was something there, but apparently that is a story idea that will (hopefully) be going into Forever, the third book in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The whole time she talked, she moved her hands around, behind her, one hand over the other, and I couldn't help wondering how many ideas she'd accidentally wiped off, until she mentioned it's on there in Sharpie ink.

AND, while I was there I got to meet one of my fellow New Orleans- area bloggers: Parajunkee!
I have to tell you, Rachel has some crazy good marketing skills - she had absolutely adorable bookmarks and business cards that she gave to the authors. Why didn't I think of that?!? She told me that this was her first signing; I've gone to a few so apparently I'm on the slow end of the learning curve. Rachel put up a few good pics and some more info in her post here.

(Me and Parajunkee with our loot!)
I really hope this is the start of more authors coming to New Orleans. The gathering for this group was intimate (read: small) but there really wasn't any promo - as I said at the beginning of the post I found out by accident!
